The "abadejo" is one of the species that has been traditionally exploited in the Argentine Sea. Although the capture was not very important, it has been increased in the last years. In this work, the structure of the concentration areas of summer, spring and winter distribution and other biological items were analyzed, basing on the data collected during cruises effected by R/V "Walther Herwing" and R/V "Shinkai Maru" in these waters during 1978/79. Winter and spring distribution patterns showed the highest concentrations located between 41º and 48º SL, specially on the slope. Summer distribution pattern showed the concentration areas located between 43º30' and 48º30' LS shifted rather to the coast when comparing to the previous one. During the winter, in... |

The Patagonian cod (Salilota australis) inhabits the SW Atlantic from 38°S up to 55°S, as well as the Pacific Ocean from 40°S up to 57°S. The annual catches of this species by both the Argentine fleet and those operating around the Malvinas Islands have significantly increased during the decade 1990-2000, peaking to 16,556 t in 1996. After this, a marked decrease in landings was noticed, and during 2003 the catch was 7,924 t. Seasonal distribution, concentration grounds, and population structure of the Patagonian cod from the Argentine Sea are described, and the mean densities of the species are seasonally related to latitude, temperature and depth, on the basis of data from surveys carried out by the INIDEP research vessels in 1992 and 1993. Highest mean... |

Based on 4 cruise surveys from July 2006 to October 2007 in the Taiwan Strait, the species composition, community structure and spatio-temporal distribution of dinoflagellate were studied. A total of 131 dinoflagellates belonging to 18 genera were identified. The population was dominated by hyperthermal and hyperhaline species accounting for 72.52% of the total species. Eurythermal and euryhaline species were the second most common one accounting for 25.19% of the total species. It was only 2.29% for neritic species. The maximum species number occurred in summer, while the maximum cell density appeared in spring. The average dinoflagellate cell density was 404.96×104 cells/m3. It showed that the dinoflagellate cell density increased from the nearshore... |

Trawl fisheries are associated with catches of swimming crabs, which are an important economic resource for commercial as well for small-scale fisheries. This study evaluated the population biology and distribution of the swimming crab Callinectes ornatus (Ordway, 1863) in the Estuary-Bay of São Vicente, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Crabs were collected from a shrimp fishing boat equipped with a semi-balloon otter-trawl net, on eight transects (four in the estuary and four in the bay) from March 2007 through February 2008. Specimens caught were identified, sexed and measured. Samples of bottom water were collected and the temperature and salinity measured. A total of 618 crabs were captured (332 males, 267 females and 19 ovigerous females), with a sex ratio... |

Livelihood systems that depend on mobile resources must constantly adapt to change. For people living in permanent settlements, environmental changes that affect the distribution of a migratory species may reduce the availability of a primary food source, with the potential to destabilize the regional social-ecological system. Food security for Arctic indigenous peoples harvesting barren ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) depends on movement patterns of migratory herds. Quantitative assessments of physical, ecological, and social effects on caribou distribution have proven difficult because of the significant interannual variability in seasonal caribou movement patterns. We developed and evaluated a modeling approach for simulating the distribution... |
