Benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators of water quality in an Atlantic forest fragment Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oliveira,Augusto; Callisto,Marcos.
The objective of this study was to evaluate benthic macroinvertebrate communities as bioindicators of water quality in five streams located in the "Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural" (RPPN) Mata Samuel de Paula and its surroundings, in the municipality of Nova Lima near the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil. This region has been strongly modified by human activities including mining and urbanization. Samples were collected in the field every three months between August 2004 and November 2005, totaling six samplings in the rainy and dry seasons. This assessment identified one area ecologically altered while the other sampling sites were found to be minimally disturbed systems, with well-preserved ecological conditions....

Biomass distribution and physiological capabilities of bacteria in the water column above a sea grass system. ArchiMer
Velimirov, B; Herndl, G; Kavka, G.
The distribution pattern of bacteria in the water column above and within a Posidonia oceanica bed near Ischia (off the Gulf of Naples) was investigated and correlated with DOC and POM data for autumn and winter. Data from samples of 5 stations along a transect from shallow to deep showed rather low bacterial densities (10 super(4).ml super(-1)) for both seasons. The number of attached bacteria was higher in late winter as compared to autumn when the leaves are shed from the stands. Except for occasional peaks DOC ranged between 1.5 and 4.5 mg C/1 while POM concentrations ranged form 4 to 14 mg AFDW.1 super(-1). Hydrolytic capabilities of isolated bacterial colonies showed that more carbohydrate substrates could be fermented in winter as compared to...

Renzi, M.A..
The "abadejo" is one of the species that has been traditionally exploited in the Argentine Sea. Although the capture was not very important, it has been increased in the last years. In this work, the structure of the concentration areas of summer, spring and winter distribution and other biological items were analyzed, basing on the data collected during cruises effected by R/V "Walther Herwing" and R/V "Shinkai Maru" in these waters during 1978/79. Winter and spring distribution patterns showed the highest concentrations located between 41º and 48º SL, specially on the slope. Summer distribution pattern showed the concentration areas located between 43º30' and 48º30' LS shifted rather to the coast when comparing to the previous one. During the winter, in...

Factores oceanográficos relacionados con la abundancia relativa de anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita) sobre la plataforma bonaerense (34°S-41°S) durante la primavera OceanDocs
Martos, P.; Hansen, J.E.; Negri, R.M.; Madirolas, A..
Research has been conducted to study the relationship between some physical variables and the relative abundance of the northern stock of the Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) within the main area of distribution of the stock during springtime. Basic data were recorded during four research surveys mainly aimed at the acoustic assessment of the stock between 34°S and 41° 30'S (Buenos Aires prov., Argentina - Uruguay). The cruises were always carried out in October from 1993 to 1996. Several environmental variables were simultaneously input into a General Linear Model to analyze the variations on fish abundance; however, the model did not account for more than 17-20% of the total variance. Nevertheless most of those factors (sea surface temperature,...

Population biology and distribution of the portunid crab Callinectes ornatus (Decapoda: Brachyura) in an estuary-bay complex of southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Watanabe,Timoteo T.; Sant'Anna,Bruno S.; Hattori,Gustavo Y.; Zara,Fernando J..
Trawl fisheries are associated with catches of swimming crabs, which are an important economic resource for commercial as well for small-scale fisheries. This study evaluated the population biology and distribution of the swimming crab Callinectes ornatus (Ordway, 1863) in the Estuary-Bay of São Vicente, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Crabs were collected from a shrimp fishing boat equipped with a semi-balloon otter-trawl net, on eight transects (four in the estuary and four in the bay) from March 2007 through February 2008. Specimens caught were identified, sexed and measured. Samples of bottom water were collected and the temperature and salinity measured. A total of 618 crabs were captured (332 males, 267 females and 19 ovigerous females), with a sex ratio...

Reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (Reunion Island). Part 1: oocyte development, sexual maturity and spawning ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Fauvel, Christian.
The reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) was investigated from catches of the Reunion Island-based longline swordfish fishery between 19-25 degrees S and 48-54 degrees E. Thus, 1727 swordfish (size range 75-289 cm, lower jaw-to-fork length, LJFL) were sampled on board commercial fishing vessels during the period of May 1998 to January 2001. Reproductive activity was assessed using macroscopic gonad characteristics, trends of gonadal indexes for both sexes, oocyte size-frequency distributions and microscopic investigation of oocyte development stages. Size at first maturity (L-50) for female and male swordfish was estimated in Indian Ocean for the first time. L50 was estimated at 170 cm and 120 cm (LJFL) for females and males, respectively....

Livelihood systems that depend on mobile resources must constantly adapt to change. For people living in permanent settlements, environmental changes that affect the distribution of a migratory species may reduce the availability of a primary food source, with the potential to destabilize the regional social-ecological system. Food security for Arctic indigenous peoples harvesting barren ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) depends on movement patterns of migratory herds. Quantitative assessments of physical, ecological, and social effects on caribou distribution have proven difficult because of the significant interannual variability in seasonal caribou movement patterns. We developed and evaluated a modeling approach for simulating the distribution...
